Join our team! Westport is immediately seeking a Special Events Manager to oversee almost all of the public events occurring in the most historic commercial area of Kansas City, as well as several new events and festivals envisioned for Westport during 2022 and beyond. The successful candidate will be an experienced, dynamic, and hands-on professional who wants to continue growing in their chosen field right along with the profile of Westport.

OVERVIEW

The Special Events Manager will be responsible for the planning, management, promotion, and implementation of all festivals, special events, and cooperative retail events presented by Westport as well as the coordination and oversight of special events presented by others occurring in the Westport District of Kansas City.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the position also regularly assists with and contributes to the implementation of organizational strategies, policies, and practices in addition to the primary responsibilities identified below.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Development, execution, and management of marketing plans for the events occurring in the area
  • Oversight of the planning and presentation of all events occurring in Westport
  • Identify prospective commercial partnerships and secure sponsorships for events and/or specific event components
  • Assist with the placement of positive public relations and social media imagery and/or messages related to events
  • Organize and safeguard financial documents/records relating to events
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise event volunteers
  • Hire, train, manage, and evaluate college interns and part-time event staff
  • Keep current, accurate, and comprehensive databases relating to the planning, production, and presentation of special events
  • Secure necessary event permits and licenses
  • Attend and assist with all events organized, planned, or promoted by the organization inclusive of set-up and strike as well as load-in and load-out

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related course of study from an accredited university
  • Two years or more of relevant work experience producing successful special events open to the public
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and especially PowerPoint
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Capacity to work within an established budget
  • Previous successful sponsorship recruitment
  • Enjoyment of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • Open to collaboration as needed to achieve the position responsibilities and desired outcomes
  • Prior success in establishing and maintaining event timelines
  • Willingness to work flexible and extended hours as needed for the presentation of successful Westport events

COMPENSATION

  • Salary of $4000-$5000 per month (based on education and prior experience)
  • Deferred compensation plan
