Oktoberfest will return to Westport for the second year on Thursday, September 27, 2018 – Sunday, September 30, 2018. This event will be a “must attend” for not only Kansas Citians, but fun-lovers across the Midwest. So, mark your calendars, secure your lederhosen and plan on attending Kansas City’s largest German heritage celebration in the of heart Westport! With an incredible array of food, beer and unique attractions, Oktoberfest is an event not to be missed.  The event will be free to the public, though there will be a charge to access specific VIP areas.

The second annual Oktoberfest will feature an expanded tasting program, the BierHaus tent, more stein hoisting, a main stage of German and current music, roaming entertainment, games, wiener dog races, unique vendors, the return of the Lederhosen Lap 5k run and a full Sunday schedule of events has been added as well.

Thursday, September 27

  • Wiener Dog Derby sponsored by Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption
    • Registration is open with $8 entry fee per dog until Wednesday, September 26th at 4pm. when the price increases to $12. On-site registration will be available the morning of the race. All proceeds benefit Unleased. Register by clicking here.
    • The first heat will begin at 12pm in the McCoy’s parking lot and check-in will open at 9:30am.
    • Each heat winner will receive a prize basket full of items for both dogs and their owners. Additional prizes will be awarded for best dressed wiener, longest/shortest wiener and slowest wiener.
    • T-shirts are in the making for the Derby! Keep an eye out for the design and how to purchase.

FAQ

What is Westport Oktoberfest?

It is a four-day celebration of German heritage at harvest time. During 2018, the festival is being held from September 28 through September 30 outdoors and begins on the 27th in select Westport Bars with The Taste of Eight (details below).

What is the cost?

The festival itself is free to attend, but there are some VIP areas, vendors and programs which require a purchase to partake.

Where/when is Oktoberfest held?

Oktoberfest 2018 will take place in Westport along Westport Rd. and Pennsylvania Ave. and will run Thursday, September 27 through Sunday, September 30.

Can I bring my alcohol or food?

You are not allowed to bring alcohol or food into the event. Alcoholic beverages and food will be available throughout the festival for purchase.

What is the Westport Bierhaus?

The Westport Bierhaus is a large open-air tent with many exclusive Oktoberfest beers. It is $20 to enter, which includes a Westport commemorative stein and one beer. It also features an emcee/DJ with music, fun and contests throughout the day and evening.

Is there food?

Yes, there will be food booths, food trucks and several of Westport’s finest restaurants participating.

Is the event kid-friendly?

Yes, there is a family area and family-friendly games and activities.  We encourage visitors to bring the entire family out during the day on Saturday and Sunday, with event programming skews to adult type entertainment from 6 pm on each evening of the event.

What is parking like?

There is street parking adjacent to the event, as well as numerous parking facilities readily available including a large garage on Pennsylvania Ave located directly behind Char Bar.

Does severe weather affect the event?

If severe weather does occur, please refer to Westport’s social media for updates on activities or possible postponements. Typically, events in Westport that encounter some rain go forward as planned.

Are other types of alcohol available?

Attendees can enjoy many elite and tasty Oktoberfest style beers, in addition to traditional favorites, as well as standard mixed drinks. Wine slushies will also be available. Expanded bar service is also available in may of Westport’s restaurants and bars.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are only allowed in public areas of the street. A few of the restaurant’s decks or patios are dog-friendly including Char Bar and McCoys. If you have a Dachshund, you are welcome to enter it in the annual wiener dog race held on Saturday. For safety reasons, dogs are not allowed inside the Westport Bierhaus.

What should I wear?

The festival is outside, so wear something weather appropriate. The event will be held rain or shine, and you can take a break from the elements by visiting any of Westport’s fine retailers, restaurants and bars.

What are the events that charge an entry fee?

Tasting of the Eight: $10 (Thursday the 27th) – tickets can be purchased here.

BierHaus: $20  (Available during the entire event)

Will I be walking around a lot?

Some. The event covers approximately four square blocks of Westport.

What is “Tasting of the Eight?”

For $10 participants receive eight 3 oz. samples at the participating bars/restaurants on Thursday, September 27.  Join us from 7:30 pm to 11:00 for the first tasting event of the festival. Purchase your tickets online at Eventbrite: Westport Oktoberfest: A Taste of Eight Beer Sampling Event.  Attendees may also purchase their tickets the day of the event at Kelly’s Westport Inn beginning at 6:30 pm.

What is Stein Hoisting?

Competitors are required to hoist a one-liter glass stein filled with beer and hold it steady and at a certain height; the last person left holding a stein is declared the winner.

Will certain roads be closed for Oktoberfest?

After Thursday evening, Pennsylvania Avenue (between Archibald Street and 40st Terrace) & Westport Road (between Broadway Boulevard and Mill Street) will be closed for the event.  Event times are:

Friday: 5 pm-11 pm

Saturday: 10 am-11 pm

Sunday: 9 am Lederhosen 5k Lap and then full event opens from 10 am-5 pm

Should I bring an ID?

Yes, if you plan to purchase alcohol.

Will there be live entertainment?

Yes, on the main stage on the west side of Westport Road (toward Mill Street).

I ride a motorized scooter. Will it be allowed on festival grounds?

No motorized vehicles are allowed in the pedestrian-only areas of Westport Oktoberfest. This includes all of the closed streets and sidewalks within the festival area.
