Kansas City's Most Fabulous Film Turns 15

Beafan

One of Kansas City's long-running and best-attended community film events returns June 12 - July 3 to the Tivoli Cinemas in Westport. OUT HERE NOW: The Kansas City LGBT Film Festival expands to three weeks for its 15th annual showcase of film premieres and special screening events. Widely acknowledged for its ability to entertain as well as educate, the festival is one of the most visible and highly regarded LGBT cultural programs in the Midwest.

OUT HERE NOW begins on Thursday, June 12 with the Midwest premiere of MATT SHEPARD IS A FRIEND OF MINE, the new documentary honored with the festival's Celebration of Courage Award. Directed by one of Matt's childhood friends, this never before assembled cinematic collage tells the story of the person behind the heartbreaking headlines. Two of Matt's personal friends from the Kansas City area, Walter Boulden and Father Roger Schmidt, who are featured in the film, will join the Kansas City Anti-Violence Project in a post-screening community discussion.

On Thursday, June 19, this year's Director's Award winner from the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, THE CASE AGAINST 8 makes its Kansas City premiere. This riveting, behind the scenes doc, goes inside with the legal team whose battle ended marriage discrimination in California and helped lift the ban against federal recognition of same-sex marriage. A live, Missouri Marriage Equality update and discussion featuring two of the local plaintiffs in the pending court case challenging Missouri's same sex marriage ban follows the screening.

Among the highlights for the festival's main, eight day event at the Tivoli from Thursday, June 26 through Thursday, July 3 include:
• The delightful and insightful documentary, TO BE TAKEI which profiles the remarkable career and personal life Star Trek icon George Takei
• The award-winning British drama, LILTING, starring Ben Whishaw (James Bond:Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) and legendary actress Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger)
• A hilariously twisted, John-Waters-meets-John-Hughes, take on an 80's high school movie, FIRST PERIOD
• The witty, what-happens-next comedy when an ex-lesbian's conversion path fails, HETEROSEXUAL JILL
• A flashy, fleshy murder mystery, OUT TO KILL starring nationally-known, gay singer/songwriter (and Warrensburg, MO native) Tom Goss

TICKETS are on sale now online and at the Tivoli Box Office in Westport. To watch film previews, get film descriptions and buy festival passes visit, www.OutHereNow.com.
