Anniversary of the Battle of Westport

On Saturday, October 9, 2010, The Westport Historical Society and the Westport Branch of the Kansas City, MO public library welcome Daniel Smith as the October featured speaker. Mr. Smith will discuss the 21-23 October, 1864 Battle of Westport, the largest battle of the Civil War west of the Mississippi.

Price’s Missouri Campaign in the fall of 1864 covered 1400 miles, the longest expedition of the war. The three-day battle marked the climax and conclusion of the decade long conflict on the Missouri-Kansas border. Although the Federals defending Westport and Kansas City were outnumbered by Confederate Sterling Price’s veterans, Smith will discuss how Price’s effort to foment a popular Southern uprising was thwarted at Westport.

Following Mr. Smith's program, everyone is invited to visit the 1855 Harris-Kearney House located at 4000 Baltimore for refreshments.
